Hero MotoCorp-backed electric vehicle startup Ather Energy will begin fulfilling customer orders for its new 450X scooter starting in November, with the Covid-19 pandemic having pushed back the company’s delivery timelines by a few months.
Deliveries for the 450X will start in November in seven cities – Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kochi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Shipments in Mumbai and Delhi will begin in December, while Coimbatore and a few other cities will see deliveries start sometime in the first quarter of calendar year 2021.
“The pandemic did disrupt our timelines by a few months, but we have been able to get back on track with our plans. We used the time to refine our expansion plan and get the ball rolling on our go-to-market strategy,” said Tarun Mehta, cofounder and CEO at Ather Energy.
Mehta added that the company has also worked extensively with its suppliers to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the supply chain.
The 450X is Ather’s first mass-market product, with the earlier 350 and 450 models being sold only in Bengaluru and later in Chennai. The company hopes to establish its leadership in India’s nascent EV space with the 450X which will cost Rs 1,59,000, exclusive of road tax, insurance and registration charges.
In Delhi, the vehicle will be eligible for an additional Rs 14,000 subsidy. Ather also has a subscription plan where users can pay Rs 99,000 upfront, and a Rs 1,999 monthly subscription for the battery in their 450X electric scooter.
The Bengaluru-based company said it will announce details on dealers and charging infrastructure across these new markets soon. It is looking to capture sales during the Diwali period and will begin offering test rides to consumers in October across all the markets where the 450X will be available.
Ather raised Rs 84 crore in fresh funding from Hero MotoCorp in July, which pushed up India’s largest two-wheeler maker’s stake in the startup to a little over 35%.
